FEAS RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Drs. Ling Guan and Fei Yuan have been awarded the inaugural Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Research Excellence Awards for 2003-04. Dr. Ling Guan is a researcher in the area of Multimedia Signal Processing, and Dr. Fei Yuan is a researcher in the area of Microelectronics Circuits. Congratulations to Drs. Guan and Yuan on this well deserving achievement.

ASSOCIATE EDITORSHIP

Dr. Bin Wu, Professor and Ryerson Research Chair in Power Engineering has been nominated as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (a premier journal in the field). Dr. Wu will be specifically responsible in the area of 'High Power Convertors'. Congratulations to Dr. Wu on this recognition by the Professional Society.

IEEE RYERSON AWARDS

By popular students' votes, Dr. Mike Kassam has been recognizied as the 'IEEE Ryerson Professor of the Year for 2003-04' by the Electrical and Computer Engineering students. Prof. Juri Silmberg, a Professor Emeritus, has been awarded the 'IEEE Ryerson Outstanding Service Award' for his various administrative roles in different capacities. Congratulations to Profs. Kassam and Silmberg on their outstanding achievements.

CFI NEW OPPORTUNITY FUNDING

Congratulations to Drs. Xijia Gu, Lian Zhao and Truman Yang for getting their CFI New Opportunities funded in this round of competition. This funding will help them to establish a brand new laboratory in the area of Wireless Sensor Networks. Well done Drs. Yang, Zhao, and Gu and best wishes for many more achievements.

This is the fourth time the Department is winning this funding. The previous three are CASPAL lab led by Dr. Zhang, WINCORE lab led by Drs. Anpalagan, Jaseemuddin, and Fernando and the OPRAL lab led by Dr. Sedaghat.

IEEE CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The IEEE Communications Chapter of Toronto Section chaired by Ryerson Professors, Drs. Anpalagan and Fernando has been awarded the 2003-04 Chapter Achievement Award by the parent IEEE Communications Society. Congratulations to Drs. Anpalagan and Fernando for their significant contributions to the professional activities.

CANADIAN ENGINEERING COMPETITION AWARD

Emilijan Mirceski, a 2nd year student in Electrical and Computer Engineering won 2nd place in the Entrepreneurial Design category of the 2004 Canadian Engineering Competition held in Waterloo, Ontario; he additionally won the Technical Excellence award in the competition.

More than 150 of Canada's brightest and most innovative engineering students participate in the Canadian Engineering Competition which connects future engineering leaders with industry, government and academia.

TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION

I am very pleased to report that Dr Gosha Zywno, from our Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received another well deserved award for her work in improving engineering education, this time from the Learning Partnership.

The Learning Partnership 2004 Technology Innovation Awards will be presented at the Professional Development and Awards Dinner on June 2 at Humber College. BTW, the keynote speaker at the event is Dr Wendy Cukier, Associate Dean of our Faculty of Business.

INNOVATIVE EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Gosha Zywno received the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology at the 15th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning that took place in Jacksonville, Florida, March 29-April 2, 204. She was one of about 20 Canadians among over 300 participants from US, UK, Australia, and Mexico.

Dr. Zywno's paper on "Accommodating Learning Styles Through Hypermedia-Enhanced Instruction", was selected as one of the 15 papers included in the "Selected Papers from the 15th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning" journal publication, which is cited by ERIC and PsychInfo databases.

She was also among the 30 nominees for the Ernest L. Boyer International Award for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology.

MICRONET BEST PAPER

May 5, 2004

A paper entitled "Watermarking and Retrieval of Multimedia Data Using Advanced DSP Techniques" authored by Shahrzad Esmaili, Arunan Ramalingam, and Sridhar Krishnan has been awarded the Best Paper Award in the Micronet Annual Workshop held in Aylmer, Quebec in April 2004. Micronet is a Network of Centres of Excellence on Microelectronics, Device, Circuits and Systems funded by the federal government and industry in Canada.

The papers were judged on the basis of the quality of the extended abstracts and the presentations. The prize includes a cash award of $1000 and a certificate. This is the third consecutive year Dr. Krishnan's research group is receiving the Best Paper Award in Watermarking. The previous two awards were in the 2002 ICME Conference held in Switzerland, and in the 2003 CCECE Conference in Montreal.
