The Department of ECBE is happy to announce a new graduate student award, the Dr. Sandeep Kaler Teaching Award. This handsome award honours a triple alumnus of our department, who unfortunately passed away in 2025. The award has been made possible through a generous donation from three MIT colleagues, Profs. John G. Kassakian, George C. Verghese, and David J. Perreault, who had collaborated with Sandeep towards the publication of the second edition of their book "Principles of Power Electronics". The department is seeking nominations for our inaugural award recipient.

About the Award

This teaching award is presented by friends, colleagues and admirers of Dr. Sandeep Kaler, who earned his Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering of Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), with research focused on power electronics. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department at the time of his untimely death in 2025. The award honors Dr. Kaler's abiding example as a caring, dedicated, meticulous, and inspiring teacher, mentor, and collaborator. It will be presented annually to a doctoral student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program of the Department to recognize outstanding work as a teaching assistant in one or more of the Department's undergraduate courses.
