Part 24: Construction of the Centre for Computing and Engineering

The Move: There and back again.

Aug 1, 2004 10:59pm
All the floors have lights, except for the north stair-well.

Aug 3, 2004 4:00pm
Dalhousie lane viewed from outside the meeting room (twist your head right as you pan right).

Aug 3, 2004 10:00pm
The north stairwell now has lights.

Aug 3, 2004
The view from my office.

Aug 4, 2004
That's what the new furniture looks like.

Aug 6, 2004
Signing-in at the security-desk; with a bit of comedy relief on the right.

Aug 7, 2004
The Gardiner Expressway at 10am Saturday.

Aug 7, 2004
Jim driving at 110km/hr!

Aug 7, 2004
Check there's no police on our tail.

Aug 7, 2004
Coming up on Toronto.

Aug 7, 2004
Nearly there.

Aug 7, 2004
Pulling into the garage; the moving truck is already there. No worries, as Nipin, Tu, Sergio
and Dan have got things under control before we arrive.

Aug 7, 2004
IEEE student office gets new furniture (hi Litifa).

Aug 9, 2004 12:54pm
One of the last remaining desks to get loaded.

Aug 9, 2004 2:19pm
Then the chairs and shelves begin their trip.

Aug 9, 2004 6:00pm
Since the freight elevator is undergoing certification, the loading dock is off-limits
and we have to park on Church street and unload at the front
entrance.

Aug 9, 2004 9:00pm
Circuits lab being set-up (you can tell it's night because it's dark outside the door).

Aug 9, 2004 9:40pm
The lab is set-up, the equipment is locked and shrouded with drop-sheets to keep the
dust off.

Aug 11, 2004
After an exhausting day, Jim hopes that the movers will not notice him when they move the
furniture.

Aug 11, 2004
Moving monitors as the sun sets.

Aug 11, 2004
Major cleaning of the corridors.

Aug 11, 2004
Carts used to transport computers, monitors and other electronics.

Aug 11, 2004 10:00pm
What the...so this is where all the garbage went.

Aug 11, 2004 10:00pm
Toronto at night, viewed from the Balcony.

Aug 12, 2004
The Front Office counter.

Aug 12, 2004
The Front Office furniture awaits installation.

Aug 12, 2004 10:00pm
Setting-up the equivalent of EPH 237— the most work-intensive lab (so far).

Aug 12, 2004 11:00pm
This is what everything looks like, at the end of a week of 12-hour days.

Aug 16, 2004
Installing the floor-covering along the Balcony.

Aug 16, 2004 9:00pm
The exit signs glow in the unfinished 3rd floor corridor. To receive an Occupany
Permit from the City, the building had to undergo a fire-inspection
and have working sprinklers, exit signs, corridors free of
obstruction, running water (cold), etc.

Aug 19, 2004
Typical faculty office.

Aug 17, 2004 11:00pm
At the end of the day, the radios re-charge. In a building with no working
telephones, and one which nearly spans an entire city block, radios
were the only means of communications.

Aug 19, 2004
Sorting the network patch- cables in the "shade".

Aug 24, 2004
Front Office in EPH, packed for moving. Yvonne is actually hiding behind the green box.

Aug 24, 2004
New sidewalks are poured.

Aug 24, 2004
Unloading at the front of the CCE (freight elevator inoperative (yet again!)) with a
make-shift bridge.

Aug 24, 2004
If you're a fan of "101 Dalmations", drop-by the Computing Services offices.

Aug 24, 2004
Catching-up on Olympic coverage (with a discarded TV and a home-made antenna) while
waiting for the movers.

Aug 24, 2004 2:00AM
The old server-room stripped of its contents. The primary RAID (top) and the
backup RAID are on the table on the left.

Aug 27, 2004
The north sidewalk is still under construction awaiting paving stones and decorative
bushes.

Aug 27, 2004
The Atrium, viewed from the entrance on the 3rd floor, is also under construction.

Aug 28, 2004
Cleaning and polishing before the students arrive on Monday, for registration.

Aug 31, 2004
This is the view from my office looking into the Computing Services office. The
reason everything is still in boxes is that I have no shelves, no
cabinets or desk drawers. So my office is used as a storage
room. Wait, there's more: I cannot connect my computer because the
electrical work is not finished (the lights are on only because 2
wires are shorted-together in the switchbox) and yes, that is a loop
of armoured cable hanging from the wall.

Aug 31, 2004
Delivery of paving stones on Gould.

Aug 31, 2004
Paving stones await installation; viewed from the 4th floor Front Office.

Aug 31, 2004
Mailboxes finally delivered...
